About Postgres by BigSQL
Postgres by BigSQL is complete. At its core, BigSQL is a PostgreSQL distribution. But in addition to the core PostgreSQL database, BigSQL is integrated with more than 20 open source projects that make it easier to do Postgres development, integration, scale-out, and management, as well as migrations from proprietary databases.
All BigSQL components are 100% open source, tested to work together, and include many of the leading Postgres-centric projects today. They include capabilities such as:
- High availability and disaster recovery
- Development environments and geospatial toolsets
- Foreign data integration
- Legacy database migration and compatibility
- Provisioning and management
- Development languages
Postgres by BigSQL is developer-friendly. Unlike some Postgres distributions, BigSQL’s toolchain is 100% open source, with no commercial dependencies. Installers are consistent across Linux, OSX, and Windows. Binaries are Relocatable. Installs and uninstalls happen cleanly.
BigSQL's goal is to make things easy for PostgreSQL developers, DBAs, and operations teams, and to always "just work". Some additional key points:
- No commercial components
- No dependencies on proprietary software
- No advertising or registration requests
- No OS-dependencies, like DLL conflicts, registry entries, etc.
Postgres by BigSQL fully supports PostgreSQL 9.6, 9.5, 9.4, 9.3, and 9.2.
About the BigSQL Development Team
The BigSQL core team is employed by OpenSCG. We have been deeply involved with the Postgres community for years. Many members of this team were instrumental in building EnterpriseDB's proprietary Advanced Server product, which adds Oracle compatibility to a core of PostgreSQL. We think the world today calls for a far more open and transparent approach.
Jan Wieck - Jan is a Senior Database Architect at OpenSCG. He is a long time contributor to the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, and has authored many key Postgres technologies over the last 20 years, including Stored Procedures (PL/pgSQL), Foreign Keys, TOAST (unlimited row size) and the Slony Replication System. He has also focused for years on stabilization and performance enhancements for PostgreSQL and related data technologies.
Affan Salman - Affan is a Senior Database Architect at OpenSCG. He is the primary original author of EnterpriseDBâs Oracle compatibility from 10 years ago and has spent much of the last six years rounding out his database internals credentials by becoming a Cassandra, Spark & Hadoop rock star.
Denis Lussier - Denis is the Founder & Chief Architect at OpenSCG. He has been in the Postgres community for 12 years. In past lives he was also the Founder & Chief Architect at both EnterpriseDB and Fusion Technologies.
Jim Mlodgenski - Jim is CTO at OpenSCG. He has been in the PostgreSQL community for more than a decade and he Co-founded the New York and Philadelphia Postgres Meetup groups. Previously Jim was CEO at StormDB, a commercial cloud version of Postgres-XC. Before that he was Chief Architect at EnterpriseDB and Fusion Technologies.
David Rader - Dave is the SVP of Engineering for OpenSCG and the BigSQL projects. He has over 20 years experience leading large scale technology and data analytics projects. Previously he was CTO for cloud Master Data Management provider MDX, Alliance Global Services and Fusion Technologies.
Scott Mead - Scott is a Senior Architect at OpenSCG and is employee #1. He has over 15 years of hands on experience configuring servers and applications for large scale production use and is the author of the Postgres High Availability (pgHA) project. He was previously a Principal Systems Engineer for EnterpriseDB and global head of systems administration at Fusion Technologies before that.
